Feminism – Why it’s necessary and why it’s misunderstood

Recently, I have begun to notice that feminism has a rather bad reputation. Feminists have been tagged as annoying, unreasonable men-haters. This saddens me deeply, as those ‘feminists’ are actually the opposite of what feminism is all about. Feminism is not about women being better than men, it’s about men and women being equal. Anyone who calls themselves a feminist and then proceeds to talk badly of either gender is going against the whole purpose of feminism.

I have heard many people proclaim that feminism is no longer necessary and many others state that because of feminism, men’s rights are ignored. Well, most dearest and most beloved bottomless void of the internet, it is a sad fact of life that feminism is most definitely necessary, and here is why:

(1) The serious:

  • There are many countries where child marriage is a common and everyday occurrence. In case anyone didn’t know, this is when young girls (usually around ten years old) are forced, by their parents, into marrying middle aged men.  These girls have no choices of their own and are raped and abused by their husbands. • In Turkey, a sixteen year old girl was buried alive for talking to boys.
  • While rape and abuse are serious problems across genders, the vast majority of reported rape victims are female. According to rainn.org, nine out of every ten rape victims is female.

(2) The Unjust:

To this day, women in many first world countries are paid less than men in the exact same jobs.

(3) The Downright annoying:

I am sick of hearing people say that women can’t be scientists, or that men can’t be chefs. I  am tired of walking into a costume store and seeing only male doctor’s costumes and only female nurses costumes. I hate being looked down upon in IT class because I am one of the six girls that take the subject. I’d much rather drive rusty nails into my eyeballs than continue to listen to any more ‘women belong in the kitchen’  jokes.

In conclusion, feminism is still, sadly, very much necessary in today’s society. Until we have equality of the sexes, we can not hope to  reach our society’s full potential. All of humankind has to work together to succeed as a species.

I do not want to live in a world where people are judged, tortured and murdered because of their genitalia.

The Problem With Christmas – My Festive Rant

‘Tis the season to criticize our culture…

In much of our society, the last three months of the year are repeatedly overwhelmed and engulfed by what has become known as the Festive Season. Living in what has oh-so proudly been defined as a multi-cultural, multi-religious society, I honestly do not understand why and how our lives, the media and even our working calenders are completely geared towards Christian religious holidays. Yes, I will accept the title of the Grinch as I shamelessly attempt to rip apart the celebration of this holiday.

Christmas is, as most people will know,a Christian holiday where people of this religion celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. As we know, every religion has its own holy days and/or days of celebration (I am not about to delve into details, as I must admit my knowledge is rather shaky in these areas).

Our so-called multi-religious society appears to have accepted Christian celebrations as something which is a society-wide affair. This, I believe is an insult to Christians and non-Christians alike. To the Christians it is, quite simply, an insult that their religion has been so extensively altered and sullied by corporations and non-Christians alike.

To everyone else, it is simply a message that their beliefs are not as important or relevant as those of Christians. In many countries, most people are given leave on Christmas, regardless of their religion, while Muslims, Hindus,Jewish people (to name a few) have to battle to get time of work and/or school for their own religious celebrations. Every year around the end of October, the stores become filled with Christmas trees, tinsel and Festive Specials. Every single marketing campaign is directed towards getting the prefect, yet still affordable Christmas gift for your friend or family member. Whether you like it or not, you are bound to be bombarded with festivities.

Why has our entire society began celebrating a religious holiday?  Well, I believe some of it may be attributed to large corporations. These people, I must admit, are brilliant. They’re thinking: Who wouldn’t love a day where you get presents and then proceed to eat as much as you can before either falling asleep or continuing to enjoy your new possessions? The answer they came up with: Nobody (except those of us who are totally self actualized and happy, but there really are not too many of those). So then these corporations do the only logical thing: they capitalized on a religious day and made themselves shitloads of cash, while gently increasing consumerism and human greed. Yaaaay!!!

In conclusion, the problems with Christmas are that it (1) Shoves religion down everyone’s throats and (2) IS ALL A GREEDY CAPITALIST PLOY. Uh, I mean it makes people greedy.

And that, Bottomless Void of the Internet, is How the Grinch stole Christmas (or should I say ‘X-Mas’?)….
